I found this article to be very interesting it ties very well into what we have been learning slightlywhat with the universe. The article talks about how astronomers have used old stars to determine the age of the universe. The article tells how Timothy Beers and his associates have discovered a radioactive isotope, uranium-238, in a metal-poor star set(p) on the outskirts of the milkyway. I suppose I should give a little back that the article talked about first. Astronomers have found the age of many stars by using radioactive dating. See astronomers are able to calculate the age of a star by using this radioactive dating. This method does work for old stars that were formed from just hydrogen, helium and lithium these are nonradioactive elements that are called metal poor-stars. Well it is believe that some of these stars were massive and exploded and set forward nuclear reactions that made a second generation of metal-poor stars and some of these stars contained radioactive i sotopes. So now that leads us to were I started until the discovery of uranuim-238 astronomers were only able to key isotope-thoruim-232.Well with the discovery of this star that contained uranuim-238 researchers were able to calculate the age of the star and make an estimated minimum age of the universe. Astronomers hope that with the discovery of more of these stars they will be able to find the minimum age of the universe. I know that was a long explanation I just dont think I could have made it shorter. Any ways I picked this article because I found it so interesting. I mean to think that for thousands of years astronomers have been perusing the stars and here in the year 2001 they are still making discoveries. On the other hand is knowing the age of the universe going to make some big impact on our lives. I guess what I am wondering is I am sure that they are spending millions of dollars for this research.

The scientific method is a process that outlines a number of principles for answering questions. Many lot in day-to-day situations engage the scientific method. For example, if I were to try to start my car and it doesnt work, my first reaction would be to think of reason my car is not starting. This is just a brief example of scientific method. The principles in Scientific method should be used in an orderly manner to answer your questions. Scientific method lets people research true things as well as false. There is no guessing when using Scientific method it is completely natural. From my military career I can say from experience that Integrity is one of our Five Army Values. I like to think the Scientific method is having entire integrity, due to the accompaniment that it is this method of discovery, and justification for that discovery, which must be accomplished entirely with integrity (www.scientificmethod.co.uk). Scientific method consists of five steps observation, hypot hesis, experiment, conclusion and scientific theory. You must light upon your problem when doing observation. Second you must gather as much information about the problem as possible. Third you want to form a hypothesis. A hypothesis is an unproved explanation for a natural event. Based on observation a hypothesis is a scientist best explanation. One reason wherefore hypothesis is so important is because it is the comparison for experimental data. Frail Ophelia of Hamlet Throughout Hamlet, Shakespeare makes it evident that Ophelia is very unstable. She continuously changes her mind about the substance she feels. Laertes and Polonius command her to do things that she does not agree with, but she does them with no argument. Afraid to stand up for herself, she stands back and watches everyone else control her life. It is obvious throughout the play Ophelia is ordered around by Laertes and Polonius, and obeys them without a moments thought. They act like she has no mind of her own, but she listens and does as they wish, so it seems she cannot think for herself. Polonius and Laerte s treat her as though she is worthless. Affirmative Action is Reverse Discrimination When the Civil Rights Bill was being debated on the floor of the Senate, Barry Goldwater predicted that this particular bill power be abused. Herbert Humphrey, however, stated that he would eat every page of the bill if ever it were used to justify discrimination against anybody on account of fly the coop or sex. The bill eventually passed and became the Civil Rights Act. From college admissions to government contracts, the Civil Rights Act has been grossly abused by giving race and gender primary consideration in admissions and hiring, resulting in blatant reverse discrimination. Paul Craig Roberts and Larry Stratton, co-author of The New Color Line How Quotas and Privileges Destroy Democracy, document the tongueless change of the 1964 Civil Rights Act from a statute forbidding preferences establish on race and gender into a weapon to coerce employers to adopt and implement quotas. This change is not so silent today. Roberts and Str atton show that, quotas are based on an intentional misreading of Title VII and are strictly illegal under the 1964 Civil Rights Act. An explicit model of this intentional misreading, or abuse, of the Civil Rights Act is when a person is fired to fulfill a quota. On August 8, the Federal Third Circuit accost of Appeals agreed. The court ruled that the Piscataway, N.J. Board of Education violated the Civil Rights Act when it fired Sharon Taxman, an overrepresented Jewish female school teacher, to make room for a sinister woman under the school systems affirmative action plan. The school district was ordered by the court to pay $144,000 in back pay. The judges decision was based on their own investigation into the legislative history of Title VII ... ...they are black? There is no question that racism did exist in our society and still does today, but the solution is not reversing the discrimination. It is hard to imagine that segregation of our schools was still legal in Califo rnia as late as 1974, it is even harder to imagine that university admissions are still based on race in 1996. The solution to preferences in hiring and college admissions should be stricter penalties to those who discriminate based on race or gender. Also, it is a little late in the game to squeeze unqualified students into graduate school. We should be working with these students in grade school. Our universities and our government go away unlikely look at any logical solutions because of their reputation of putting bandaids on social problems. There is no doubt, if Herbert Humphrey were here today, he would be take a lot of paper.
